Business cards and why I don't care if they're the wrong color.

I ordered some new cards last week and they showed up yesterday. I've had the design in pdf format on my phone for months so I knew exactly what they'd look like. Except when I pulled them out of the box they were not exactly what I expected

They were brown and not black:
Front.

Back.

A lot of what I'm feeling aligns with something that Leila Courey, Art Buyer at Leo Burnett, Toronto said on Heather Morton's blog.

I don’t mind if photographers want to bling out their promos for extra attention as long as the quality of the work goes along with it. What I don’t dig, is photographers spending what looks like a ton of money on business cards, expensive promos or portfolios meanwhile they really need to spend more time crafting their work.

When an artist is more established, or has been off the radar for a while, I can understand wanting to brand/re brand themselves to let it be known that they’re still available for assignment but even still, this won’t sway me. It’s all about the work
.

Bingo. Bottom line: IT'S ALL ABOUT THE WORK. I'm just now building my book. I just need people to have my name and my phone number. That's it. Brown, black, blue, green. Doesn't really matter. The info is there. I'll probably re-order a box in the correct color (just because I like all my stuff to match and the printer is a very good personal friend of mine and i get em dirt cheap) but I'll pass these out too. It's the difference between hoping people will remember my name/website/blog and knowing they have the info in their pocket.

I found this post Through Chase Jarvis who really said it best: "Now that we’re clear on that, get out from behind the computer and go shoot something."

I think I will, sir. I think I will...

  1. Like this post. I'm pretty much self-taught when it comes to design. I try to follow a few simple rules: 1: make easily readable. 2: looks good at all sizes. 3: good in BW, or any color & white. That's it. And well, I like feeling like I'm doing something right. :)
